Abbenrode
Searching for Traces
Abbenrode’s divided past
Abbenrode has always been a border town. Today, it is also home to a very special group – the Abbenrode Border Guards’ Association. Border guards from East and West Germany meet regularly at the local history museum to keep the memory alive.
Our walk tells the story of a place formed by the border through eyewitness accounts, archive material and historical photographs. We learn about demolished places, displaced people, a successful escape and a unique reunion of former border police officers who once stood as enemies. A search for traces brings that brings to light the hidden stories of this landscape.
