A Divided Sky

A literary walk

Location: Ziemendorf Duration: approx. 80 mins. Stops: 9 Walking distance: 6.5 km

Grenzwandler takes you on a “literary walk” that leads from Ziemendorf to the Wirlspitze – a place where the former border can almost be felt physically. A huge sand dune stretches through the pine forest and makes a striking bend here. A relic of the last Ice Age and, at the same time, a consequence of the historic border zone.

As visitors, we set off on a walk to this impressive natural landscape, accompanied by significant voices from post-war German literature. Christa Wolf, Volker Braun and Uwe Rada are three of the authors who, in their poetry and prose, engage in different ways with a divided country – and with the question of what this border and the memory of it do to people. Their texts reveal the border not merely as a historical line, but as an inner experience. Thus, a dialogue emerges between landscape and literature about the past and the present.

“Yes,” she said quietly. “The sky is the first thing to split.”
