Böckwitz-Zicherie

A divided village

Walk to the Border Nature Trail

Location: Böckwitz-Zicherie Duration: approx. 60 mins. Stops: 10 Distance: 4.59 km

A “Divided Village” tells the story of a place torn apart by the inner-German border. Roads ended at the barrier, neighbours became residents of two opposing political systems. What was once a shared living space became a symbol of division – with barbed wire, checkpoints and omnipresent surveillance. Eyewitnesses recount family rifts, lost paths and everyday life under a state of emergency.

The tour reveals just how deeply the border cut into the village and the lives of its inhabitants. Former border installations and personal memories bring history to life and paint a vivid picture of what it meant to live in a divided village.

If you wanted to have visitors, you had to submit an application for a pass four weeks in advance. It wasn’t possible to do so on the spur of the moment.
