Border Tower

The Karnberg Treasure

Location: Wendehausen – Katharinenberg Duration: approx. 30–60 mins. Stops: 13 Walking distance: 6.5 km

Starting from the Wendehausen Border Tower, the Border Walker traverses a beautiful landscape here – one that was long inaccessible to the residents of Wendehausen. Eyewitnesses recount stories of forced resettlement and the loss of their homeland – and we set out in search of the vanished ‘Treasure of Karnberg’

“For us children, it was like going on holiday at first. Only we never came back.”

Border Walk in Wendehausen

There are two possible routes starting from the Grenzturm memorial in Wendehausen. Whilst the shorter route (2.5 km long) focuses on the former border fortifications and their traces in the landscape, and features two eyewitness accounts, the longer of the two tours (6.5 km long) explores the mysterious disappearance of the “Treasure of Karnberg” – and what this has to do with the Brothers Grimm.

Starting point: Grenzturm Memorial, Wendehausen
