Bottleneck

A Place of destiny and a place to work

Location: Marienborn railway station Tour duration: approx. 20 mins. Stops: 3 Walking distance: 0.39 km

Marienborn railway station lies about 4 km from the Marienborn Memorial to the Division of Germany. During the division of Germany, this was a border station and thus a “bottleneck” between East and West.

For many East Germans, leaving the country by train seemed like a possible route to freedom – a dream that for quite a few ended in the nightmare of a prison cell. With strict checks, sniffer dogs and X-ray scans, personal dramas unfolded at this spot.

Here, the Grenzwandler combines the stories of two people into a kind of “walk-through film”, that brings the history of this place to life.

And so I made my way towards the station with my two suitcases and the clear knowledge that I would not be going back.
