Experience the Green Belt in a new way.

The Green Belt is a strip of extraordinary biotopes, 50 to 200 metres wide and around 1,400 kilometres long, stretching from Travemünde on the Baltic Sea to the border triangle near Hof – the former inner-German border strip. With the exception of the high mountains, it connects all typical German landscapes: from the Baltic Sea coast across the North German Plain to the low mountain ranges.

Along 10 routes now along the former inner-German border, the history of places can be experienced exactly where it took place.

The Grenzwandler turns your mobile phone into a pocket-sized time machine

The Grenzwandler tells stories of the division of Germany using archives, eyewitness accounts, animated videos and immersive media. Each tour is unique and a standalone documentary format.
Whilst the content is location-specific and can only be played on-site, the stories can be explored here in short form as scrollytelling formats. To do so, click on one of the pins on the map.
