In Abbenrode, the Grenzwandler goes searching for traces of a border that has since disappeared.

It shows how people started to talk despite, or because of, this border.

Following the course of the stream, you find the former home of Ursula Breustedt. Her family’s farm was the last one before the border.

On Christmas Day 1989, people from Abbenrode gathered spontaneously and protested for the opening of the Wall.

Günter Mittrach, who filmed these scenes at the time, remembers that day.

We meet Bernd Schilk, who fled to the West at the age of 18.

That escape gave rise to a friendship that has lasted to this day.

At the red telephone box, the Grenzwandler lets you record a message or an opinion on the division of Germany.
